The Rottweiler characteristics

With their imposing appearance Rottweilers are often considered dangerous, but are also loyal and obedient. Learn everything about an exceptional pet!

Maybe it intimidates you that the Rottweiler vies with the bulldog about which breed is the strongest bite. Or that in some states of Germany he is classified as a potentially dangerous dog.

In addition, if we consider its appearance, which undoubtedly inspires respect, the overall picture may seem scary.

Nonetheless, if your Rottweiler is properly educated and socialized, he is a faithful and trusting companion.

A dog with Roman ancestors

The origin of the breed can be traced back to the epoch of the Roman Empire. There, their ancestors were used as watchdogs, but also to lead cattle.

When the Romans invaded the German region, now known as Rottweil, the crossing with local dogs resulted in the so-called “Rottweiler Metzgerhund”.

The name was given to him because these dogs were used to help with the slaughter of cattle.

At the same time, they were used for their courage to protect property. But over time, the other merits of the dogs became more well-known, and the breed became more popular.

A breed with an intimidating appearance

The Rottweiler is a strong, robust and athletic animal. He is of medium to tall stature, with a broad – but not disproportionate – head as perhaps his most clearly salient feature; and a strong jaw with a scissor bite.

Other physical characteristics that should be mentioned:

  • Body height at the cross: 61 to 68 cm (male) and 56 to 63 cm (female).
  • Approximate weight: 50 kg (males) and 42 kg (females).
  • Life expectancy: 12 years.
  • Medium-sized, dark brown eyes that give it a firm expression.
  • Triangular ears, hanging and pointing forward. As they touch his head, they give it an even broader look.
  • The hard outer coat of medium length and black-red color defining its appearance.

Character and behavior of the Rottweilers

Obedience, attentive, courageous, reassuring and loyal – these are just some of the adjectives that describe the nature of these magnificent dogs.

But if the Rottweiler stands out for something else, that’s his flexibility and intelligence.

His adaptability and emotional stability enable him to engage in a variety of tasks. He also learns easily.

Therefore, he is not only the first choice when it comes to protecting family and property, but is also trained as:

  • police dog
  • therapy dog
  • guide dog
  • Search and rescue dog

Also shine Rottweiler in dog sports and competitions, which is about obedience.

Important: Socialization for Rottweilers

Despite all this, a dog of such size and personality must be appropriately socialized from the puppy age.

Even if he proves to be trusting and protective in a familiar environment, his behavior towards strangers and animals can be completely different.

Therefore, if you want to keep a dog of this breed, from the first moment you have to make it clear who gives the orders and what rules apply to living together in the house.

In any case, it is good to recall that although Rottweiler is considered a potentially dangerous animal in many countries, it is merely an arbitrary name.

In fact, there are no animals that can be defined in such a way, except when they have been abused or irresponsibly raised, with the aim of fueling their aggressiveness.

The right care for Rottweiler

If you decide to keep a Rottweiler, keep in mind that the cost of food, vet and accessories may be slightly higher given its physique.

Also, ask yourself if you could fight such a strong and robust dog when going for a walk, play, or other activities.

In addition, the Rottweiler is a low-maintenance dog in terms of its hygiene, and he does not cause major health problems.

Only he tends to get fat – so it is important that you give him the food recommended by the veterinarian, especially with regard to the quantities given.

The spout is also very important for such an active dog. It would be ideal if you have a yard or a garden where you can enjoy most of the time.

If this is not the case, you can also have it trained in certain places in a sport.
